I am directed by his Lordship to request that you will state, for the information of the Earl of Carnarvon that the matter had already been brought before him by the Postmaster General of Hong Kong, and that, on communicating with the Directors of the Company it is found that, in deciding to withdraw the allowance referred to, they had overlooked special circumstances under which the payment had originally been arranged.
The Company, on reconsideration, have decided to restore the per diem allowance of $1.57 - paid to the Marine Sorters while on shore at Singapore, but in regard to the Wine allowance of $2/6 a day, formerly paid to the Sorters, the Company regret their
